Biography

Svetlana Tomić is a Full Professor at the Faculty of Foreign Languages (Alfa BK University, Serbia). She participated in a research project Gender Equality and the Culture of Citizenship Status supported by the Ministry of Science, Education and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia. Tomić is a member of the editorial board of Serbian Studies (Indiana University) and a contributor to World Literature Today (Oklahoma University). She was a guest lecturer at the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory, Institute of Social Sciences, Ilija M. Kolarac Endowment, Center for Women’s Studies, Belgrade Open School, OSCE Mission to Serbia, Adam Mickiewicz University, Swarthmore College, Columbia University and Princeton University. Svetlana Tomić was a contributor to the project of the Croatian Radio (HRT) – The Dictionary of Post-Yugoslav Literature. Her main research interests are institutionalized public knowledge of nineteenth-century Serbian literature, research methodology in closed societies, hidden history, women’s writings, Post-Yugoslav literature, Serbian language, functional and reading literacy. In 2022 she was awarded SEFEM - Section for Feminist Research of the Serbian Sociological Society award “Anđelka Milić” for her decade long contribution to gender and feminist studies. Her book “The Hidden History of New Women in Serbian Culture: Toward a New History of Literature” (Lexington Books) has been awarded The 2022 North American Society for Serbian Studies Book Prize as the best book published in English on aspects of Serbian social and cultural history.


She has authored seven monographs, edited seven books with the foreword, and published more than fifty papers and a hundred reviews in Serbia and abroad. Together with Prof. Anna Novakov (Saint Mary’s College of California) she was the guest editor of Serbian Women and the Public Sphere: 1850-1950, a special issue of 2011 Serbian Studies. The 2014, 2015, 2020, and 2021 issue of the scholarly journal Reči is published under her tenure as Editor-in-Chief. For the first of her two published books of poetry she received the Literary Youth of Serbia award. Her poems, short stories, essays and polemics have been published in different periodicals in Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Hungary. She is a member of the North American Society for Serbian Studies and the Association for Women in Slavic Studies.

Biografija

Svetlana Tomić je redovna profesorka  na  Fakultetu za strane jezike (Alfa BK Univerzitet, Beograd, Srbija). Učestvovala je u naučnom projektu Rodna ravnopravnost i kultura građanskog statusa: istorijska i teorijska utemeljenja u Srbiji koji je podržalo Ministarstvo prosvete, nauke i tehnološkog razvoja Republike Srbije. Tomić je članica uređivačkog odbora Serbian Studies (Washington D.C) i saradnica World Literature Today (Oklahoma University, USA). Predavanja po pozivu održala je na sledećim  institucijama: Institut za filozofiju i društvenu teoriju, Institut društvenih nauka, Kolarčev narodni univerzitet, Centar za ženske studije, Beogradska otvorena škola, Misija OEBS-a u Srbiji, Univerzitet Adam Mickijevič, Svartmor koledž,  Kolumbija Univerzitet u Njujorku i Prinston Univerzitet. Svetlana Tomić je bila saradnica projekta Hrvatskog radija (HRT) Pojmovnik postjugoslavenske književnosti. Njena glavna istraživačka interesovanja su institucionalizovano  javno znanje o srpskoj književnosti 19.veka, metodologija istraživanja u zatvorenim društvima, skrivena istorija, književno stvaralaštvo žena, postjugoslovenska književnost, srpski jezik, funkcionalna i čitalačka pismenost. U februaru 2022. godine, za decenijski doprinos feminističkim i rodnim studijama u Srbiji dobitnica je nagrade “Anđelka Milić” koju dodeljuje SEFEM - sekcija Srpskog sociološkog društva. U junu 2022. godine njena knjiga The Hidden History of New Women in Serbian Culture: Toward a New History of Literature (Lexington Books) dobila je nagradu Severnoameričkog udruženja za srpske studije (The North American Society for Serbian Studies) kao najbolja knjiga koja je objavljena na engleskom jeziku o aspektima srpske društvene i kulturne istorije.

Autorka je sedam monografija, priređivačica sedam knjiga sa predgovorima; objavila je preko pedeset naučnih članaka i preko stotinu kritika u Srbiji i inostranstvu. Zajedno sa prof.dr Anom Novakov (Saint Mary’s College of California) bila je gostujuća urednica specijalnog temata Serbian Studies-a  u 2011. godini: Serbian Women and the Public Sphere: 1850-1950.Kao glavna i odgovorna urednica objavila je brojeve Reči za 2014, 2015, 2020 i 2021.  Objavila je dve knjige pesama, za prvu je dobila je nagradu Književne omladine Srbije. Pesme, kratke price, eseje i polemike objavljuje u različitoj periodici u Srbiji, Hrvatskoj, Bosni i Hercegovini i Mađarskoj. Članica je dva udruženja: North American Society for Serbian Studies; Association for Women in Slavic Studies.
